Late Winners, Ripped Shirts And Ronaldo At Euro 2016

Here we are on Day 11 of Euro 2016 and we are finally getting to crunch time when teams will survive or be booking their flight back home. Mind you with 4 of the 3rd placed teams going through to the last 16 you have to have a pretty poor tournament to be going home at this stage.

There have been a remarkable amount of late winners at Euro 2016, and this seems to be down to the fact that so many teams are playing for the draw, they have very little possession and as a consequence they eventually tire and the inevitable happens and they concede a late goal.

This is exactly what happened in the England v Wales game as Wales sat further and further back, inviting England onto them. I think that their negativity cost them because they played so passively that they could not get their big time player Gareth Bale into the game at all. If they had shown more confidence on the ball they may have caused England problems. But hopefully they can still get through by beating a poor Russian side this evening.

As for England they may just be stumbling onto their best 11 as the tournament progresses. Sterling looks devoid of confidence and his control is just not good enough at this level, and Kane looks a bit heavy legged to me although I certainly think he can produce the goods if England go further.

I would definitely give Vardy and Sturridge starts this evening. Alli, Rooney (who has been a revelation in midfield), Lallana and Dier have all played well and should retain their place although if things are not going to plan I would like to see Wilshere coming off the bench to give us something extra in there.

The back four picks itself with the two solid centre halfs Smalling and Cahill backed up by two superb attacking full backs in Walker and Rose. People are building up Slovakia saying they will provide a tough test but Wales beat them so how good actually are they? I take England to win comfortably this evening.

Last nights game provided some levity with Switzerland having to change at least half a dozen shirts as they ripped from the slightest touch. They played well and deservedly got the point they needed to progress to the last 16 with France.

Meanwhile Ronaldo is having a nightmare tournament with Saturday seeing him miss a host of chances against Austria including a penalty. Portugal have now drawn their first two games and will probably have to beat Hungary in their last game to go through.

No team is looking unbeatable so far, with Spain and Italy probably the pick of the teams but it is all to play for without a doubt.
